3ds Max 2019.1 Update – Overview

3ds Max can only really be as useful as the next tool in the chain … and only as valuable as the ideas users bring to it.
That’s why this release of 3ds Max focuses on making it easier for users to develop, manage, and exchange their ideas, whether it’s shaders, file formats, scripts, or — most importantly — their work!

And here I'm still on 2012 release, because they like to actually remove features, without telling you,for example UV editor, you can snap to pixels in 3ds max 2012(provided you applied texture)in 2018 you can't,and the list goes on and on,not to mention start-up.

You're missing a lot on features, stability and speed. I agree some things change (for the worse) but the overall gains far outpace the losses by much.

And if you complain about start-up, well, you clearly never used Unreal LOL! I personally would love it to start faster, but this is a far cry from a bad thing if it's stable enough (and it is, according to user reports).

Your other point (regarding pixel snap) it IS on Max, with even MORE option (to snap to pixel center or edge, and more). Just tested on Max 2019, and it's there, check it out 🙂

Of course you can Sap-To-Pixel in 2018. It`s in the Snaps-Flyout options.

yeah, new max versions have more tools than older max.
you just have to find it, sometimes autodesk removes something, but they bring it back later…example: scene explorer

I'm not so sure about that- while yes positively, when it works, blender is the defining open source modeling etc., tool- BUT for those of us who need/needed to edit very complex models , blender has been a stifling tool, as edit mode was borked for anything in edit mode for such models–2.8 is fixing it, I know I"ve tried it and its miles ahead of 2.7x, so thankfullly they finally fixed it..what I wonder is why did they wait so long to do so .it was a horrendous disabling problem for blender, that even those with powerhouse systems were having major problems with.

It prob. is THe only free/open source tool of its magnitude, but they sure blew it with horrible viewport issues. Lets hope 2.8 puts all that to rest..I'll believe it when I see it, but in alpha- its still a trainwreck ( as alpha would be).

Exactly, maya is king of that- you can see that in how well it handles edit mode,,,max can't match that and neither will blender ever likely be able to..we'll SEE what we get in 2.8 final and beyond..but ya maya is king atm.

WHy not, it deserves the praise atm,,mainly maya for me and its hardware viewport,,its king of speed,,houdini is very close though,,max is last from current experience,,laggy.

u get job because of your skills not the softwares, and if used to one picking another one is easy, just matter of weeks Modelers, TDs or Animators…etc use the same principles..for example any animator who doesn't grasp the principles well and can't make an appealing animation will not get far hell if you even make stick figures move well you'll get a job..Autodesk have a monopoly on the industry because it's billion dollars company but yet doesn't make revolutionary things this like comparing Microsoft to Linux but i am seeing changes in the future , maya is becoming buggy ,slow , and full garbage collection, they keep adding features half baked or no one wants, what i have seen from blender 2.8 is really promising doesn't mean they'll take over night but if maya keeps going down hill it will be obsolete like Softimage in 10 or 20 years 🙂

I do., millions do, you're just sore bc its not open source-or something else maybe–anyway blender is taking last place atm, bc of its tired, wornout, SLOW as snails , current 'viewport', yes its being fixed , allegedly, in 2.8 final and beyond, and yes,its much better in current alpha 2.8, but evenso, in its current alpha state, expectedly so, the viewport takes forever just getting INto edit mode- lets hope that being fixed ?

3ds max needs an indie license ASAP! Everybody is changing to Blender and Houdini. 3 years from now 3ds will be almost forgotten. I like 3ds max but let's be real, what you get with blender 2.8 and Houdini indie is hard to beat and it's only 1/10 of the cost or free.

@Selkie – And what actually makes Max more good in architecture than the other Blender; Modo etc? The texture/material assets?
Max have few build in primitives as wall, door, window but they are so generic – do any self-respectful architect use them?
Architects use CAD apps – even SketchUp is more architecture oriented than Max I think?

    • OrangeAnimation 09/08/2018
      Rispondi

right right, it's just that max integrates with cad better. I know a theme park studio that uses max because of that. that is what they said, I was not there for the 3D stuff so don't know the details.

It is just deliberate company trap. For instance Autodesk are holding the integration with FBX files – and for every new edition of their soft – a new FBX format is created – incompatible with older third-party apps. The creator of Blender have tried to approach Autodesk and negotiate for universal FBX/open format that can connect once and for all – all application – they however dont seems to like that idea – against all corporate methods of dominance – This is their way to survive/do money – by making sure they have the better integration with hard regulated apps.

And Blender cant play on this level of ugly game – not because it is less capable app – but just because it is completely free and non obligatory. The corporation find Blender presence as a threat – it is not the other way around.
There is a few more things to the Autodesk story – you can hear it here

I couldn't agree more,,Houdini is wonderful, fast viewport UNLIKE blender ( yes I know they are working onit, but WHY did it take so long ?) and maya also has a wonderfully fast viewport..right now its houdini and maya for fast operations , max close ish and blender last place by a mile. I don't care if it has superior camera tools, the viewport sucks arse , still. Max has some incredible UV unwrap tools that I think makes blenders look silly , in 2019 version I mean, and many other things..so yea good LUCK getting indie from max,,they SHOULD do it it would be smart, but at $180 something to rent amonth, highly unlikely, but they could disable many things, no renderiing or very res, watermarks, something and match houdini. That would be smart, but so far nadda.

There is one autodesk app that is magical and that is meshmixer–it can't do fine grained editing like the others, but I"ve used it to make the main model of my game dev, and for free you can't beat it, -so autodesk is at least doing right by community on that front,,,they really should look hard at indie for max tho.

"UNLIKE blender"??? What you mean by "fast viewport"? Have you seen Blender's EEVEE? Real-time render engine – light years ahead of Autodesk.
Actually can you find something faster than EEVEE?! LOL
If you are experience low fps – it is your old card. Nvidia have some bad reputation with the driver support and Blender – but new gpu and drivers must fix this issues.
