Dan Bodenstein 2015 Demo Reel

1. Guardians of the Galaxy
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Created smoke trails and internal particles lighting the smoke. Used clustered simulations to keep sim time low despite the length of the trails.

2. Hercules
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Matched reference footage shot on set to create fire and smoke simulations using Houdini’s Pyro solver. The spread of the fire was precomputed in a solver sop and then easily adjustable based on attributes. The flaming people had their center of mass translated to the origin before simulation. Velocity fields were used to account for the missing motion, then the completed sims were copied back onto the moving animations.

3. Divergent
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Floor ripples were created with a mix of a low resolution FLIP simulation and ripple simulation. Burning rope was created by using a custom shader to output several noise masks, and assembled in the comp. Rope flames were created with Houdini’s pyro solver.

4. FX The Strain
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Built library of flames and smokes that could be combined and placed as needed to fill the city while still maintaining a fast turn around time.

5. Ender’s Game
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Created setups for spaceship interaction, clouds, explosions, thrusters, lasers and lightning arcs at Digital Domain. Worked heavily on targeting and interactions between different types of spaceships. Wrote custom light to speed up geometry lighting of volumetrics in Mantra. Developed custom photon scattering techniques to remove flickering of light scattering in shuttle launch smoke shots.

6. The Amazing Spiderman
Software: Houdini, Arnold, Katana, Nuke.
Description: Created webs, smoke, sparks and debris at Sony Imageworks. Heavily modified existing setups to meet specific challenges for each shot.

7. Divergent
Software: Houdini, Mantra, Nuke.
Description: Created highly art directable flocking simulation, using particles and point cloud lookups.
