Thanks for your work, it's a good release but there isn't really big major features that blow your mind…but still good.

+Makan Persia I want to test properly the Max Creation Graph in production. Release 2016 will be the standard for all the new plugins so it's a kind of must have to stay up to date…sincerely I was also expecting more. A big new step from Autodesk is the price and payment methods but for me they are not relevant since I bought subscription since 2008 so…let's see what will happen next.

Can you talk about the time to open the program and how much of RAM it consumes?
Can you say if the mental ray is more fast?

    Sorry for my English.

+stenionet Sinerely I didn't noticed such big improvement in startup speed. During time I noticed that 3ds Max is little faster to open when you just install it, let's say first month, then it slows down, even without installing plugins, new custom paths or other stuff. I wonder if somebody else experienced the same.
Consumed RAM is quite high, we are around 600 Mb. +Autodesk  recommends 8Gb and I totally agree. If you use just 3ds Max it's fine, but if you open +Adobe Photoshop  some plugins, After Effects (Chrome, Spotify and so on) you can experience some drastical bottlenecks with less than 8Gb.
Still have to try mental ray and iray properly in production, but at first, fast, superficial sight, it looks the same to me.

Did somebody experienced some speedup in mental ray? I red of some users having trouble with gamma correction, is it true?

Thank you very much for the informations.
Everytime I think to change from 3ds max to maya or C4D, but I am 44 years old and tired of studying new programs.

3ds MAX must do something about its weight. Soon, we will need a computer of 10k to work.

+stenionet yeah we always need more power because software are using more and more resources. So our feeling is that the free resources are the same and we are not having progress. In reality by the way, we have great technology at our disposal: Global Illumination, Photorealistic Based Rendering, Realtime possibilities…they were unimaginable few years ago.
According to other software I think they are all tools at our disposal, it's how we manage them the real difference. Of course some are more advanced or specific but I don't see so many differences between using Maya, 3ds Max or Cinema 4D. in my opinion it is important to know at least two of them so if one disappears from the market we have an alternative (Softimage is a sad example)

why are you still using Windows XP?

    • OrangeAnimation 17/05/2015
      Rispondi

+Robert Whaite that's Windows 7 in "performance mode" without any graphical extras.
I prefer it because it consumes less memory from the system…and I'm nostalgic of Win XP 🙂

+Robert Whaite +playsys3d That theme isn't even Windows XP, it's Windows 95… Windows XP was blue, unless you change it to that sickly shade of green or silver

    • OrangeAnimation 21/07/2015
      Rispondi

+Kurt Ingamells yeah that's true… I told you I'm nostalgic 🙂 I'm using an old version of TuneUp to switch from normal to "turbo" mode. In reality I don't know if performance are really boosted but RAM usage drops and I feel safer during the recordings of tutorials.

    • OrangeAnimation 21/07/2015
      Rispondi

Aha, I'm using Windows 7 too, and I know disabling Desktop Composition has an absolutely massive positive impact on performance (my computer is rather low-end), so I made a little batch file to toggle it on and off 😀

    • OrangeAnimation 16/06/2015

+Rafael Ocampo generally I apply the HDRI image to the environment (via Environment and Effects) and then I switch the viewport to use the environment map as background, pressing Alt+B.
      You tried that?

    Very clear walk through, thanks!!

downloaded the trial and I can't get Iray to render DOF… Mental ray no problem but Iray won't. I can even see the DOF preview in the view port. I thought maybe it was just the new physical camera causing the issue but it's the same with the standard camera. Any ideas?

    • OrangeAnimation 13/07/2015

+d1g1dav3 sounds weird, I have to try and I'll let you know. I remember there are two DOF versions: the default, deprecated and a new one specifically developed for Mental Ray/iRay…I'll check in few hours and update here.

+playsys3d Thanks for getting back! I've fixed the issue. You have to use a standard camera and make sure the units are setup.

Hi, I wish to know is there in max 2016  an isolate option which isolate selected object ( Alt + Q)? I’m working with max 2013 and in ’14 and ’15 versions they removed this option.

    • OrangeAnimation 24/08/2015
      Rispondi

+Татьяна Алёхина Hi, yes there is the option. You can toggle the feature with Alt+Q or via the "red lightbulb" on the bottom of the user interface, just on the left of the lock.
Sound strange it didn't work on your '14 and '15 because I'm using this command a lot in all the release. Hope this helped.

    • OrangeAnimation 06/12/2015
      Rispondi

+Татьяна Алёхина ALT+Q was still available in both the 2014 and 2015 releases, but you couldn't disengage isolation mode by pressing ALT+Q again for some reason, you had to use the lightbulb at the bottom of the screen.

are 3ds max 2014 compatible plugins compatible with this release as well?

    • OrangeAnimation 24/08/2015
      Rispondi

+Dhruv1223 To be honest I didn't try a previous plugin with this release, maybe somebody else can be more precise in the answer. The only thing I know is that in the past, up to 2015, it was necessary to wait the rebuild of plugins. V-Ray or Corona Renderer, for example, are exposing the compatibility with Max 2016 in the upgrade list.

    • OrangeAnimation 31/08/2015
      Rispondi

+simco50 it's strange, that "fade-in" effect shouldn't happen when you model…if we are talking about the same feature.
However, you can try to change the hardware render mode from Realistic to Shaded. Let me know.
Anybody else is experiencing the same problem?
