3ds Max 2015 and Mixamo Auto-Rigger

This video shows the interop between Autodesk 3ds Max 2015 and Mixamo’s Auto-rigging toolset. The resulting FBX contains a skinned rig that can be converted to a 3ds Max CAT or Biped rig with a single click.

NOTE: at the time of recording this I had not used the “symmetry” option when auto-rigging this character. I should have. =) //gD

Is this the only rig you tested for the scripts? I took the swat model from their site. The catrig script manages to get the arm placement wrong while the biped script gets the hands wrong (which I can fix after it's rigged. Not the same for CAT.)

    Thank u!! I hate weighting!!!!

    • OrangeAnimation 12/03/2015

You still gotta weigh. Plus depending on your model complexity – sometimes bones won't go in the right depth. It's a good start, but you still have to put in work.

We need a tool that rig a character more easy for anytime and as many times as we want, without paying monthly fee to use

hey, since you are using 2015, do you have any idea why the import or export fbx cant show me scale factor? litterery its not even 0.00 its just not there the | symbol flashing like i could write my own numbers but nop nada cant even do that

Ugh, I've got it almost perfect. I uploaded an FBX, auto-rigged it, and it worked beautifully in the preview window. Then I downloaded an FBX, imported it, and when I ran the CAT script it gave the character gigantic forearm and palm bones. Anyone else have this problem? What am I doing wrong?

i've seen this only recently myself.  the Mixamo support people are awesome and said this might have to do with 3ds Max 2015 sp3.  they are looking at fixing it this week!

    • OrangeAnimation 07/04/2015
      Rispondi

Yeah, they're really good about quickly responding to technical issues. I'm uninstalling SP3 right now and will try it again. Fingers crossed…

+Abby Nickerson Update: Yeah, it turns out it was SP3. It worked after the uninstall. Of course, now we've rolled out Max 2016 at my workplace and I haven't tried it since then.

    • OrangeAnimation 04/03/2016

this doesnt do faces but there are systems out there that create morph targets on faces (such at Autodesk Character Generator – as an option on export)

Yes! This is exactly what I am looking for to add my customized SE CAT Rig. Had to switch to 3ds max because blender seems to derp on FBX… with learning blender in less than a week and little to no knowledge in 3ds max, Mixamo's auto rigging toolset will be of great use. 😀

Hey Gary, I don't know if your still replying to this comment section but I went to Mixamo and it looks like they have changed it from the way it was in your Video. Can you still get the 3D Max scripts and rig the same as in this Video?

    • OrangeAnimation 13/03/2018

I honestly havent tried since they were acquired by Adobe.

      Rispondi

oh ok, I am working on some Animation using 3DMax involving Spiderman and was looking for an easier rigging system as I have tried Cat and biped but I got to say being a traditional artist rigging is my least favorite part. lol

    • OrangeAnimation 13/03/2018
      Rispondi

CAT is probably the easiest imho. Biped still has its place no doubt and for the obvious case of humans. Both can have mocap applied and I recall scripts that allow you to switch from one to the other someplace…

    • OrangeAnimation 13/03/2018
      Rispondi

ok if you recall where let me know I will probably give Cat another try . I built the spiderman model 4 years ago so, I might build another updated version as I built that one using box modeling from tutorials Mike Bauer sent me. I get to leave my construction biz of 40 yrs in a month so I want to finish a few projects I had started.

Hi there is there any way of keeping the initial pose? For example if I have my character in mixamo exported lying down can the auto biped rig the mesh with the lying down pose? Alternatively can I save the bones pose and paste to biped?

  39. OrangeAnimation 26/10/2018

These scripts seem to be no longer available… i get 404…
